WOOSTER, Ohio – The Adrian College women's basketball team began their 2014-15 season Saturday afternoon in the Nan Nichols Classic against host school the College of Wooster. The Bulldogs controlled the game early and fought off the Fighting Scots as they won 79-74 to begin their season 1-0.
The Bulldogs jumped out on top of the Fighting Scots by taking a commanding 26-13 lead. Wooster then fought their way back into the game before halftime as they would take a 10-0 run to cut the Bulldog lead to three points just before the break.
The Fighting Scots played the Bulldogs tough in the second half as they looked to cut even further into the 35-30 Adrian lead. The Bulldogs would not surrender their lead as they would stretch their advantage to as many as 13 points. The Fighting Scots would use a 9-0 run to cut the Adrian lead to 67-65 with 2:38 remaining but the Bulldogs held their ground with clutch free throws in the final seconds to secure the 79-74 victory.
Adrian was led by Marissa Cotton as she recorded 25 points and five rebounds in 32 minutes of play. The Bulldogs saw four of their starting five hit double digits in scoring with Jasmyne Owens, Brigitte Zavithsanos, and Jorden York each joining Cotton to lead the Adrian scoring. Ownens tallied 14 points and 13 rebounds. Zavithsanos and York scored 10 points and 11 points respectively.
Adrian will finish up play in the Nan Nichols Classic tomorrow (11/16) when they take on John Carroll at 1 p.m.
