Bulldogs Hold Anderson to .319 Field Goal Percentage on the Way to 67-58 Road Win

ANDERSON, Ind.--Senior guard Antoinea McElroy and junior backcourt mate Marissa Cotton each scored 18 points to lead the Adrian College women's basketball team to a 67-58 non-conference win over host Anderson University on Saturday at O.C. Lewis Gymnasium.

The Bulldogs, who go into the Christmas break winners in three of their last four outings, push their overall record to 4-4. The Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference-affiliated Ravens, meanwhile, dropped their straight to fall to 3-7 on the season.

Blayr Poston paced Anderson with 14 points on the strength of four 3-pointers, followed by Shannon Gavaghan with 12 and Courtney Skinner had 10.

The leading scorers in the game, Cotton and McElroy also both helped Adrian own a 47 to 38 rebounding edge with 11 and 10, respectively, to complete the double-double. McElroy shot 6-for-12 from the field and made all six free throw attempts, while Cotton was 7-for-13 from the floor in 28 minutes. Junior Kennedy Kunce added 14 points, six rebounds and a game-high three blocked shots, and senior Amber McCullough chipped in nine points and six rebounds.

Anderson took a 10-7 lead after the first quarter behind Poston's five points.

Adrian took control in the second by outscoring the Ravens 25-16 in the frame to go up 32-26 at halftime. The Bulldogs shot a blistering 64.7 percent from the field (11-17) as McElroy and Kunce led the spurt with eight and seven points, respectively.

Skinner drained a 3-pointer with 8 minutes and 59 seconds remaining in the first half to give Anderson its largest lead at 15-7, but Adrian ended on a 25-11 run over the last 8:13. McCullough's layup 4 minutes later put the Bulldogs ahead to stay.

The Ravens got within 36-35 at the 5:07 mark as Gavaghan scored six points in a row, but Kunce scored seven of the Bulldogs' next 10 points and the visitors led 45-38 with 2:07 left in the third.

In the fourth quarter, Adrian led by as many as 10 points on three occasions and kept Anderson at bay.

The Bulldogs return to the court on Monday and Tuesday, Dec. 28-29, when they travel to Daytona Beach, Fla., for the 22nd annual Land of Magic Classic. Adrian opens against No. 2 nationally-ranked Amherst College at the Ocean Center, then versus Marywood University.
