ADRIAN, Mich.--Despite seeing four scorers in double-digits on Saturday afternoon, Adrian College couldn't overcome a fast start by visiting Albion College in a 76-65 loss to the Britons in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association women's basketball action at the Merillat Sport & Fitness Center. Albion improves to 5-10 on the season and 2-5 in the MIAA, while the Bulldogs fall to 7-8 overall and 4-3 in the conference.
Adrian seniors Amber McCullough and Antoinea McElroy paced the team with 14 points apiece, followed by classmate Jorden York with 13 and junior Paige Machnacki had 11 off the bench, including three 3-pointers.
Darian Payne led Albion with game highs of 18 points and 15 rebounds, plus she had four steals and two assists.
The Britons jumped out to a 9-0 lead over the opening 4 minutes and 14 seconds on the way to finishing the first quarter up 20 to 8.
A York 3-pointer put the Bulldogs on the scoreboard and they closed within 11-8, but Albion put together another 9-0 run to end the first 10 minutes.
Albion, which led wire-to-wire and by as many as 25 points, went into the locker room up 42-24.
After going down 60-35 late in the third quarter, Adrian went on a 25-12 run to cut the deficit to 72-60 after McElroy's traditional three-point play with 2:53 to play in the game. But the Bulldogs couldn't get any closer.
For the game, Albion held a slim 45-44 rebounding advantage and shot 41.3 (26-63) from the field compared to 35.7 (25-70) for Adrian.
McCullough pulled down a season-high 11 rebounds for the Bulldogs, who also got eight boards from Machnacki.
Adrian will look to get back on the winning track on Wednesday when it hosts Olivet in another MIAA encounter, tipping off at 6 p.m.
