Visiting Olivet Holds Off Women's Basketball Comeback, 54-51

ADRIAN, Mich.--Senior co-captain Amber McCullough matched her career high with 18 points to pace all scorers, but it wasn't enough as Adrian College was unable to complete a valiant comeback in a 54-51 loss at the hands of Olivet College on Wednesday at the Merillat Sport & Fitness Center.

With the win, the visiting Comets improve to 9-8 on the season and 5-3 in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association. The Bulldogs, meanwhile, lost three in a row for the first time to fall to 7-9 overall and 4-4 in the MIAA.

Dallas Austin paced Olivet with 15 points, three blocked shots, two steals and six rebounds, while Bre Kidd notched a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Adrian trailed 39 to 27 on a three-point play by Austin with 2 minutes and 37 seconds left in the third quarter, but scored the next seven points to close within 39-34 going into the fourth. Freshman Katie Crawford (6 points, 7 rebounds) made a pair of layups to spark the rally.

Olivet was able to push the lead up to nine, 46-37, on a Shauni Hankins (8 points, 5 assists) 3-pointer at the 7:15 mark of the fourth quarter. The Bulldogs, however, were able to twice cut the deficit to one, 48-47 and 50-49, in the final 4 minutes.

With the Comets leading 54-51 with 7 seconds remaining, Adrian had a good look at the basket in the game's final possession. But senior Jorden York's (11 points, 5 assists, 3 rebounds) 3-point field goal attempt to tie the game and force overtime hit the back rim and McCullough grabbed the offensive rebound without getting another shot off before the final buzzer.

Olivet led 17-12 after the first quarter and 28-23 at halftime.

Adrian enjoyed a 42-36 rebounding edge, led by senior Antoinea McElroy (9 points) with nine and McCullough had eight.

The Bulldogs hit the hardwood again at 6 p.m. Saturday at Alma for another MIAA encounter.
