ADRIAN, Mich.--Junior Marissa Cotton poured in a season-high 22 points and senior co-captain Amber McCullough recorded a double-double with 16 points and a game-high 11 rebounds to help host Adrian College turn back Trine University, 66-59, in a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association women's basketball contest at the Merillat Sport & Fitness Center on Wednesday.
With the win, the Bulldogs improve to 9-9 overall and 6-4 in the MIAA with the sweep of the regular-season series over the Thunder (11-7, 4-6).
Hayley Martin had a strong all-around game for Trine with 26 points to lead all scorers, eight rebounds, four assists and three blocked shots. She was the only TU student-athlete in double-digits, while Ashley Elliott chipped in eight points. Cassidy Williams dished a game-best six assists and posted six points.
Senior Antoinea McElroy added 12 points, seven rebounds, two assists and four steals for the Bulldogs, who outscored the Thunder 25-14 over the last 8 minutes, 9 seconds to get the win.
Adrian did not trail until the fourth quarter when Trine scored the first four points on a pair of Martin layups to go up 45-41 in the opening 2 minutes. The Thunder came back from a 35-24 halftime deficit to knot the score 41-41 after three quarters.
The Bulldogs, however, responded immediately with a 14-0 run over a 3:21 span to seize control, 55-45, with 4:48 remaining. McCullough had six points and junior Emilee Davidson four during the decisive run.
Adrian hosts nationally-ranked and MIAA-leading Hope at 3 p.m. Saturday.
