MIAA Weekly Awards for Dec. 11, 2017
FREELAND, Mich.--The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association on Monday named Adrian College sophomore guard Shannon Garvey (Concord, Ohio/Cleveland Villa Angela St. Joseph High School) the MIAA Women's Basketball Player of the Week, for the period ending Sunday. This signals her first conference weekly award.
Garvey led Adrian's 2-0 week by averaging 20.5 points on 51.7 percent field goal shooting (15-29) and 42.9 percent from three-point range (6-14). She also was 5-for-7 from the free throw line for a .714 percentage. In addition, she averaged 7.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 1.0 steal and she blocked a shot. She poured in a career-high 27 points to lead all scorers, making 10 of 17 field goals including three 3-pointers, with eight rebounds in a 76-67 win against MIAA opponent St. Mary's (Ind.) on Saturday. The next day in an 81-62 non-conference victory over Finlandia, she scored 14 points, had seven rebounds and made four assists. She was most effective versus the Lions in the second half when she helped the Bulldogs turn a three-point halftime advantage into a 49-33 cushion with a 16-3 run to open the third quarter, igniting the rally with eight points on a couple 3balls and jumper.
Currently, the geology major is tied for second in the MIAA in scoring with 16.0 points per game and third in three-point field goal percentage at 41.9.
Adrian (4-3 overall, 2-1 MIAA) wraps up a four-game homestand on Wednesday against Kalamazoo College in a MIAA encounter here at the MSFC. The opening tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
