Women's Basketball Loses Heartbreaker to NACC Leader Concordia Wisconsin in Vegas, 62-59

LAS VEGAS--Sophomore Shannon Garvey erupted for a career-high 26 points on a stellar shooting afternoon, but that was not enough for the Adrian College women's basketball team to get past regionally-regarded Concordia-Wisconsin in a 62-59 loss at the hands of the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference-leading Falcons. Wednesday was the Bulldogs' opening game in the Las Vegas Hoopla classic, where CUW also defeated SUNY Poly on Tuesday, 79-68.

Final Score: Concordia University at Wisconsin 62, Adrian College 59

Location: Centennial Hills Community Center; Las Vegas, Nev.

Records: Concordia Wisconsin Falcons 8-2 overall; Adrian Bulldogs 4-5 overall

= Garvey drained 10 of 13 shots from the field, including 4-for-6 from three-point range. She also had four rebounds.

= Classmates Emily Somerville and Angelina Goosby also achieved double digits with 13 and 10 points, respectively.

= Goosby notched a double-double with 11 rebounds, which led all student-athletes and established a season's high.

= Brianna Wagner led four CUW Falcon starters in double digits with 16 points, followed by Audrey Scharmer and Baylee Barker with 13 apiece and Clara Chambers added 11.

= Scharmer paced her team with nine rebounds.

= Concordia-Wisconsin, which led wire-to-wire, outscored Adrian at the free throw line (14-20 to 10-16) for the difference in the game.

= Adrian mounted a furious comeback in the fourth quarter after Scharmer made two free throws after getting fouled while going up for an offensive rebound, giving CUW its biggest lead at 54-42 with 9 minutes and 30 seconds to play.

= Sophomore Alivia Kondrath completed a traditional 3-point play at 7:23, and then Garvey scored seven of her team's next nine points, to ignite a 12-4 scoring run over a 4:15 span to bring the Bulldogs within 58-54 and 3:08 to go.

= Garvey drained a 3ball with 5 seconds left to make it 60-59 Falcons and the Bulldogs fouled to try to get the ball back. After Chambers converted two free throws, Adrian got one last look at the basket to send the game into overtime but sophomore Aly Kubik's (5 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 steals) three-point field goal attempt missed the mark.

= Both teams had 36 rebounds for the game, but CUW outscored Adrian 18-12 on second-chance points by making the most of 13 offensive boards.

= Garvey's .769 field goal percentage is tied for sixth place in school single-game history.

= This marked the first meeting between the schools in women's basketball.

= The Falcons lost by only eight points, 69-61, at nationally-ranked Hope College, which is Adrian's conference opponent in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association, earlier this season. = Adrian's last two losses have come by only nine points combined.

= Garvey ranks second in the MIAA in scoring at 17.2 points per game.
