Sophomore Chelsea Essenmacher becomes the first Adrian College bowler to qualify for the USBC Intercollegiate Singles Championships shooting a 1,227 for an average of 204.5. She finished tied for fourth out of a field of 115 bowlers at the Intercollegiate Singles Sectional qualifier in Allentown, Pa.
The top four bowlers from each of the four sectionals qualify to compete in the USBC Intercollegiate Singles Championships which will take place April 17 and 21 at Sun Valley Lanes in Lincoln, Neb. After six games of qualifying, Essenmacher would tie Katie Thornton of Webber International with a ninth and 10th frame roll-off to decide who would take the fourth and final spot.
Thornton shot the highest three-game block and picked to bowl first and finish last. Both girls struck in the ninth frame to even up the match. Essenmacher left nothing to chance and struck out in the 10th forcing her opponent to match her or face elimination. Thornton stepped up in the 10th and left a six-count sealing the win for Essenmacher.
"Chelsea is a great bowler and today everything just clicked with her," said head coach Jody Fetterhoff. "She's been working so hard on her mental game and it really paid off. She was able to stay composed and threw four great shots when she needed them the most, securing her trip to nationals in April where she will compete against 15 girls."
