Bulldog Bowling Finishes Day One at Nationals

RENO, Nev. - The women's bowling team had a very interesting day one at the XBowling Intercollegiate Team Championships hosted at Sparks Convention Center. The Bulldogs bowled in qualifying during Wednesday morning and rolled a total of 4,319 pins which placed them 13th out of 16 schools. They had a 2,140 in the first group of 12 games and followed that up with a 2,179 in the second group of 12 games.

After a break in the day, Adrian took on fourth-seeded Newman University out of Wichita, Kansas in the first match which is a best-of-seven baker game format. The Bulldogs defeated the Jets 4-1 on the lanes dropping only the second game. Adrian won game one 193-184, game three 223-195, game four 199-191 and game five 177-159.

The upset propelled the Bulldogs into the winner's bracket in the double-elimination tournament and they would square off with fifth-seeded Grand View University out of Des Moines, Iowa in the final match on Wednesday night which started around 9:45 p.m. eastern time. Adrian dropped game one 188-173 but then rallied to win three of the next four to take a 3-2 lead in the match. AC won game two 191-180, game four 182-178 and game five 198-147. In the fourth game, the Bulldogs trailed all the way until the 10th frame. They finished the game with four straight strikes to pull it out and gain momentum. With just one more game needed to advance, the Bulldogs could not finish strong and dropped game six 200-146 and the decisive game seven 253-154. In the final game, Grand View made a statement with eight straight strikes en route to advancing further in the winner's bracket.

The team has just a little time to regroup as they will bowl again at 11 a.m. eastern time on Thursday morning against ninth-seeded and defending national champion Maryland-Eastern Shore. The winner between the Bulldogs and Hawks will stay alive in the tournament and face the winner of Midland/Wichita State at 12:45 p.m. eastern time.
