HOW IT HAPPENED
St. Norbert got off to a quick start, taking an early 1-0 lead nine seconds into the contest after winning the opening draw. The Green Knights had the lead for the next 12-and-a-half minutes before senior captain Tory Harshman evened the score with 7:18 remaining. Junior forward Jacqueline White cycled the puck down low to Harshman who put a shot on net. The rebound popped out front and junior linemate Brianna Buchanan swiped at the puck and knocked it across the goalmouth to Harshman coming around the back of the cage who was able to bang it home to tie the game.
Harshman would also give the Bulldogs the lead in the first period, scoring the go-ahead and game-winning goal with 39 seconds remaining in the first frame. Buchanan had the puck behind the net and found an outlet pass to junior defenseman Rylee Bates at the point. Bates' shot was turned aside but she got her rebound back and found Harshman striding towards the net. Harshman caught the goalie off guard and was able to slip the puck five hole on her to give AC the lead heading into the break.
There wasn't any scoring for the first half of the second period, until senior forward Kortney Diaz buried a shorthanded goal with 9:01 left to go in the second stanza. Diaz won the draw back to junior defenseman Kelly O'Sullivan to start the kill and O'Sullivan fired the puck out of the zone. A St. Norbert defender knocked the puck out of the air and senior forward Hannah Dalrymple picked up the loose puck and was joined by Diaz on a two-on-one. Dalrymple showed veteran poise by letting the defender overcommit to her before zipping the puck behind the defender to Diaz with a wide-open net to tack on an insurance goal. The score remained 3-1 in favor of Adrian for the majority of the game until O'Sullivan iced the game with an unassisted empty net goal with 42 seconds remaining.
The Bulldogs took an unusual amount of trips to the penalty box in the game, going shorthanded a total of nine times in the game, including having to kill a five-on-three power play twice. Nine penalty kills is a new game-high this season and the most since AC killed all nine shorthanded situations against Manhattanville on Jan. 8, 2016. Adrian's shorthanded goal was its fourth of the season and first since Nov. 10 at Trine. This year is now tied for fifth with the 2010-11 and 2012-13 seasons for most shorthanded goals in a season. The program record of six has been set four times, most recently in the 2016-17 National Runner-Up season.
• Harshman, Diaz, and O'Sullivan all scored for the Bulldogs, with Harshman netting two. Diaz has now scored in each of the last three games and has five goals in that span. She also leads the team with 13 tallies, with Harshman right behind her with 12.
• Buchanan, White, Bates, Dalrymple, and O'Sullivan tallied assists, with Buchanan helping on two scores.
• Freshman goaltender Denisa Jandova made 19 saves to pick up her fifth win on the season.
• Lauren Michael scored St. Norbert's lone goal and Rebecka Olsson and Libby Barbato picked up assists.
• Anais Aurard stopped 30 shots in the loss.
The Bulldogs finish the series with St. Norbert tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 9 at 3 p.m. After that, Adrian will host Marian next weekend to wrap-up the regular season.
