HOW IT HAPPENED
Adrian was very strong on offense, holding the ball in the Spartans' half throughout the opening 20 minutes. CWRU found itself in the Bulldogs' side of the 50, given a corner kick in the 25th minute. The corner kick was placed in front of the net where is was knocked in to put the bad guys up 1-0, a lead they would maintain into the second half.
The second 45-minute stanza started off rather rocky for AC, with CWRU getting itself a second tally with props to an own goal on Adrian's behalf. The goal was recorded as Kimberly Chen's shot was deflected off a Bulldog and past the gloves of Ayverie Giller.
Adrian responded less than 10 minutes later with a goal of their own as Megan Louwers sent a ball across the goal line, which the goalkeeper stopped then bobbled, giving McKenna Mahoney the ball and an open shot on the goal.
The Bulldogs were able to knot the game at two apiece as Caroline Fleming benefitted from a Sara Lee chip to the top of the box, as she was able to draw the goalie right and squeeze the ball just inside the left post with 17 minutes remaining in regulation.
CWRU looked to take the contest in the final seconds of regulation, receiving the ball after a foul on the Bulldogs. The Spartans' Christina Hickson took the shot, which ricocheted off the right post and out of bounds, forcing a 10-minute overtime.
Overtime period one opened in favor of Adrian as Mahoney sent a strong shot onto goal in the opening two minutes, stopped by a stomach save. Fleming was the only other Bulldog to see a quality opportunity for a goal, as her shot in the 97th minute of the contest went just right of the goal. The period ended much like regulation, as the Spartans tossed another shot on-goal, this time stopped by Giller.
Overtime number two was over almost as soon as it started, with CWRU recording a goal in the first 24 seconds.
- Freshman McKenna Mahoney with her second-career goal to put the Bulldogs on the board.
- Captain Caroline Fleming, as she tied the game at 2-2 with her goal in the 72nd minute.
- Fellow captain Ayverie Giller, who played in all 100:24, making two quality saves.
The Bulldogs hit the road as they travel to Westerville, Ohio to faceoff with the Otterbein Cardinals in a 7 p.m. contest on Thursday.
