ADRIAN, Mich. - The Bulldogs seemed to be in control for a majority of the afternoon, but split with Bluffton in the softball doubleheader as Adrian now sits at 7-4 on the season. The Bulldogs lost in extra innings in the first game, 2-1, then came back and got a 4-0 win in the second half of the doubleheader.
In game 1, sophomore Brittany Bertrand drove in fellow sophomore Katie Dewyre to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Both teams went scoreless until the seventh inning, when Bluffton tied the score, making Adrian bat in the bottom of inning seven.
With senior Maggie Hein on first, Dewyre smacked a double to left field, moving Hein to third with only one out. The Bulldogs were unable to advance a run home and Bluffton got out of the inning forcing extras.
In the eighth inning, Bluffton was able to capitalize when Adrian wasn't, as the Beavers scored one extra inning run to win the game. Senior Kelly Eberhardt got the loss, giving up just one earned run and striking out four in eight innings of work.
The following game was Adrian domination. Much like the first game, the Bulldogs got a first inning run when Maggie Hein scored on a wild pitch.
The Bulldogs got a huge lift in the fifth inning, when Kaitlyn Hinojosa came up to the plate with the bases loaded. The freshman launched a three-run triple to right, giving Adrian a lead of 4-0.
Eberhardt took the circle again in the second game and had another strong performance. In total, the senior went six innings, giving up four hits, and striking out three. Junior Jami Shafley came on in relief for the last inning, retiring all three batters faced for her first save of the season.
With the split, the Bulldogs will now have two days off before a Saturday showdown with Concordia (Mich.). Adrian will travel to Concordia for a doubleheader with the first game starting at 12:00 pm.
