Softball Wins Game One, Fights but Falls in Game Two

OLIVET, Mich. - After showing a strong performance in the first game during a 4-3 win, the Adrian Softball team fell to Olivet in game two 10-7 in the MIAA doubleheader. With the split, the 14-11 (6-4 MIAA) Bulldogs now sit at fourth place in the conference.

In game one, senior Kelly Eberhardt took the circle for Adrian and earned her ninth win of the season, after going seven innings, giving up three runs on five hits, while striking out seven.

After the first three innings went scoreless, Adrian started the top of the fourth inning with three runs, as the Bulldogs got four hits off of Olivet's Rachel Cook.

Freshman Brooke Stewart started the rally, getting a one-out hit and advancing to second on a Kaitlyn Hinojosa single. Both runners advanced another base when Sarah Hall hit a single to left, loading the bases for Brittany Bertrand. Stewart advanced home on a Bertrand sacrifice fly, making the score 1-0, with Adrian in the lead.

With runners on second and third, senior Katrina Wotten came up in a huge spot, smacking a two-run double to left-center, scoring Hinojosa and Hall, increasing the Bulldog lead to 3-0.

Olivet added one run in the fifth inning, then threated in the sixth, adding two more runs. Eberhardt was able to get Alyssa Nielsen to fly out to left with the bases loaded, ending the threat. The Comets were unable to find any runs in the seventh, as the Bulldogs pulled out the 4-3 victory.

During the second half of the doubleheader, Adrian let a large lead slip away, as the Bulldogs ultimately fell 10-7 in the game.

The Bulldogs got five runs in the fifth inning, as Hall and Tara Camper were both able to knock in two runs in the inning.

Going into the top of the sixth, Adrian held a 7-3 lead over Olivet, before the wheels fell off for the Bulldogs. Stewart started the inning pitching, but was replaced by Eberhardt after giving up two runs in the inning. Overall, Stewart went three innings, giving up four runs while striking out three, but did not get the loss, as Eberhardt gave up the go-ahead runs, which sealed the deal for Olivet.

Hall finished the pair of games with three hits for Adrian, while Wotten had three RBI on the day. Eberhardt is now 9-8 on the season after earning the win in the first game, and being the losing pitcher in the second.

The Bulldogs will travel to Case Western Reserve on Saturday, and take on the 20-13 Spartans for a 2:00 PM non-conference doubleheader.
