CLERMONT, Fla. - A slight change of scenery seemed to do the Adrian College softball team some good on Tuesday. The team moved from Hancock Park to the National Training Center complex and promptly won a pair of games with a 6-4 win over John Carroll and a 3-1 victory over Lebanon Valley.
The Bulldogs evened their season record at 3-3 in a pair of tight games. Adrian built a 6-1 lead over John Carroll before the Blue Streaks scored a single run in the sixth and two more in the bottom of the seventh to make it interesting. Junior Katie Dewyre tore it up on the plate with nine total bases just missing the cycle by a home run. She collected a single, double and two triples going 4-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Freshman Morgan Brandt went 3-for-4 in the eighth spot with a double, run and RBI. Freshman Jessica Sarch went 2-for-4 with an RBI in the leadoff spot.
Adrian scored three runs in the second inning and then tacked on a run in the fourth and two more in the fifth off JCU starter Rachel Byrnes. Byrnes lasted five innings and allowed nine hits and five earned runs with four walks. Both teams had their opportunities as 20 runners were left on base combined. Sophomore Brooke Stewart went the distance in the circle allowing 11 hits and two earned runs with four strikeouts.
The top of the order played well in the win over Lebanon Valley. Sarch and freshman Macy Laws each went 2-for-3 at the plate and stole a base. Sarch also scored a run and is currently leading the team with a .450 batting average (9-for-20) in Florida. Adrian broke up a 1-1 tie with two runs in the bottom of the sixth courtesy of a K'ya Toles-Burton double.
Freshman Kelsey Meyer picked up her first win of her career going six innings and allowing seven hits and one earned run. Meyer fanned six and walked one before giving way to Stewart in the seventh. Stewart got the save with a 1-2-3 finish including a pair of strikeouts.
