NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The softball team showed a great deal of resiliency on Saturday afternoon at Saint Mary's as they dropped a 5-3 decision in game 1 after pitcher Callie Selner hit a two-run, walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth. The team bounced back in game 2 by scoring three runs in three straight innings to propel them to a 9-4 win in the nightcap. Adrian had 13 hits and nine strikeouts by pitcher Brooke Stewart who improved to 6-6 in the circle.
Saint Mary's scored single runs in the first, second and fifth innings in game 1 to take a 3-0 lead over the Bulldogs. Adrian tied the game with three runs in the top of the sixth. Rachel Jason led off with a pinch-hit single and reached third with a one-out single by Katie Dewyre. Dewyre took second on the throw to third and Kaitlyn Hinojosa reached on a fielder's choice allowing Jason to score and Dewyre to move to third. Karissa DeVore hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Dewyre with the second run. Kelsey Meyer helped her own cause with a two-out RBI double to right center allowing Hinojosa to score the tying run.
The Belles held Adrian off the board in the eighth inning as runners reached second and third and turned that momentum into the winning runs in the ninth. Catcher Morgan Bedan reached on a fielding error and an overthrow at first allowed Bedan to move into scoring position. Selner stepped up and delivered the walk-off homer to right center for the 5-3 win. Selner went nine innings and improved to 8-6 allowing three earned runs with no walks and seven strikeouts. Meyer threw eight innings and gave up three earned runs with five walks and 10 strikeouts. Meyer also had two hits in four at-bats. Stephanie Bohlmann had a double in three at-bats. Hinojosa had a triple in four at-bats with a run.
The Belles got ahead 1-0 in game 2 in the first but then Adrian scored three in the second to take a 3-1 lead. Ashley Walker had an RBI single and Macy Laws followed with a RBI single. Jessica Sarch also had a RBI single which scored pinch runner Natalie Fox.
Saint Mary's cut the lead to 3-2 in the top of the third but three more runs by the Bulldogs in the bottom of the third made it 6-2. K'ya Toles-Burton collected an RBI double and Walker stepped up again with a RBI single to right. Laws had her second RBI with an infield single and the Bulldogs had a comfortable lead.
AC put the game away with three more runs in the fourth. Walker reached on a fielding error allowing three unearned runs to score with the bases loaded. Saint Mary's added single runs in the fifth and seventh but did not really threaten for the lead. Sarch ended the game 3-for-4 and is now hitting .441 in conference games during her freshman season. Walker had her first multi-RBI game as a Bulldog going 2-for-3. DeVore had a double in three at-bats with a run scored. Kayla Chapman hit a home run for the Belles going 2-for-4 in game 2. Sarah Burke took the loss for SMC falling to 6-6 in the circle. Brooke Stewart went seven innings and yielded three earned runs with no walks and nine strikeouts. Stewart is now 3-2 in MIAA contests with 36 strikeouts in 30.2 innings. Adrian will host Defiance College on Monday at the AC Softball Field in their final non-conference games beginning at 3:30 p.m.
