ANGOLA, Ind. – The Adrian College softball team defeated Hope College for the third time this season and bounced the Flying Dutch from the 2013 MIAA Tournament with a thrilling 3-1 win on Thursday afternoon. Freshman Karissa DeVore had her biggest hit of the season with a one-out, two-run walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh. It was DeVore's second long ball of the season and scored Macy Laws from second base after she led off with a single and took second on a sacrifice bunt by Kaitlyn Hinojosa.
Brooke Stewart continued her fine pitching winning her seventh straight start and improving to 11-6 overall during her sophomore season. Stewart went seven innings and allowed five hits and one earned run to go with two walks and three strikeouts. Natalie Hiser took the loss for Hope falling to 10-6 in the circle for the Flying Dutch. She went 6.1 innings and allowed eight hits with a walk and strikeout.
Hope took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a Kristin Higgs RBI single but Adrian would conclude the scoring with three straight runs. The Bulldogs tied the game in the fifth as Jessica Sarch scored on a passed ball and DeVore ended things in the seventh.
Adrian (18-16) will play Alma College on Friday at noon in an elimination game. Alma beat Adrian 1-0 earlier on Thursday but lost 3-1 to host Trine in the winner's bracket game to set up the win-or-go-home rematch.
