ANGOLA, Ind. – Four hours seems like a very long time to be doing anything and put the pressure of a conference tournament on top of it and you had the Adrian versus Alma battle in an elimination game on Friday on a neutral field at Trine University. The longest game in school history ended with a 2-1 win for the Bulldogs in 17 innings against the Scots.
Alma took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second as Abi Clark doubled and scored on a Kayla Merice triple to right. The Bulldogs evened the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth as Karissa DeVore reached on a fielder's choice and later scored with two outs on a RBI single by Brooke Stewart.
Over the next 12 innings both teams had chances to break the deadlock but could not muster a second run. Alma finished the game stranding 20 runners while Adrian left 21 on base. The Bulldogs won the war of attrition in the bottom of the 17th as Morgan Brandt singled with one out and Rebecca Greco followed with a double which moved Brandt to third. Brandt ended the marathon by scoring on a wild pitch.
Adrian ended with 17 hits and four errors while Alma collected 16 hits and made a pair of miscues. Louise Rezmer and Stewart went the distance for their respective teams in the circle. Rezmer tossed 213 pitches while Stewart threw 254 pitches. Stewart improved to 12-6 allowing just one run with five walks and eight strikeouts. She faced 72 batters in the game and also went 1-for-6 with two walks at the plate. Katie Dewyre led Adrian with a 4-for-7 game with a walk. Brandt had three hits in eight at-bats. Greco came off the bench to go 2-for-3 with her third double of the season.
The Bulldogs had to turn around 30 minutes later and face the second-ranked team in NCAA Division III. Trine sat and waited in the winner's bracket and used the fatigue of the Bulldogs against them in the early going. The Thunder scored in each of the first five innings included a back-breaking, seven-run bottom of the third.
Adrian trailed 9-1 after three innings but mounted a comeback with three runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth. Trine's defense committed two errors in the fourth which led to all three runs. K'ya Toles-Burton hit a three-run home run in the fifth to make it 10-7. The Thunder responded with three runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth to increase their lead to 13-7. Adrian scored once more in the seventh as Toles-Burton got her fourth RBI on a single up the middle.
Adrian concludes its season with a 19-17 record and did not have a single senior on the team. Kelsey Meyer took the loss in the circle allowing nine earned runs with two walks and three punchouts. DeVore went 2-for-3 with a walk and run. Bree Fuller tossed five innings and Andi Gasco finished up the final two innings for Trine (36-3).
