CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Bulldogs took on Case Western Reserve Thursday afternoon in a nonconference doubleheader with the Spartans. Adrian was able to compile eight hits and six runs in the game one, but Case Western was able to take the game, 11-6 as they crossed home plate in every at bat. The Bulldogs took the early edge again in game two before the Spartans battled back behind four home runs as they took the Bulldogs down, 7-5. Adrian now stands at 19-15 overall.
Kelsey Meyer (6-6) made the start in the circle and totaled 4.1 innings pitched to take the decision. Kaitlin Lock came in relief for 1.2 innings and allowed two runs. The Bulldogs jumped on the board first as Morgan Brandt recorded her third home run of the season in the top of the first. The Spartans would answer with three runs in the bottom of the first and one in the second to take the 4-1 lead. The Bulldogs would respond, once again, with the long ball as Meyer hit a grand slam in the top of the third to give Adrian the 5-4 edge. Case slowly pulled away from there as they tallied seven runs over the next four innings to hold the 11-5 edge as Adrian headed into their final at bat. Kaitlyn Schneider and Brandt would put pressure on Case as they stood on second and third with one out before Karissa DeVore hit a sacrifice fly to score Schneider. The Bulldogs rally would fall short as the Spartans held on for a 11-6 final score.
Payge Reed (3-2) pitched 4.1 innings and recorded two strike outs. Meyer then came in relief for 1.2 scoreless innings. The Bulldogs would jump out on top of the Spartans with a two-run home run from DeVore in the top of the first. Case would tally runs in the second, third, and fifth innings to take a 7-3 lead. DeVore kept the Bulldogs in the game as she hit her second home run of the game, another two-run shot, to right field that scored Brandt and brought the Bulldogs within two in the top of the sixth. The Spartans were able to hold off Adrian in their final at bat and completed the sweep with a 7-5 victory.
Adrian will play their final regular season double header tomorrow (4/24) at 4 p.m. in Holland, Michigan against Hope College.
