Bulldogs Fall to Olivet on Senior Day

ADRIAN, Mich. - The Adrian College softball team celebrated the 2017 senior class in the final home doubleheader of the season for the team. The Bulldogs faced off against Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) foe Olivet in the games. The Comets were able to pull out victories in both games (3-2 Game 1, 4-3 Game 2). Paige Cubberly led the Bulldogs with three hits on the day plus she got the start in the circle for game two.


Final Scores: GAME ONE: Olivet 3, Adrian 2; GAME TWO: Olivet 4, Adrian 3

Records: Olivet (14-22, 5-9 MIAA), Adrian (12-22, 5-7 MIAA)


• Adrian struck first, scoring in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead.

• Olivet would respond in the second by scoring two runs on four hits to take the 2-1 lead.

• The Bulldogs would knot things up in the third after an error by Olivet's second baseman.

• The Comets scored the final run of the game in the fourth to take a slim, 3-2 lead.

• Despite the lack of offensive production and the four errors by Adrian, the score remained close throughout the game.

• In game two, Olivet scored a run in the first and three runs in the third to give the Comets a 4-0 lead.

• The Bulldogs rallied late in the game by scoring a run in the fourth and two runs in the sixth to cut the Olivet lead to one run, 4-3, heading into the final inning.

• With two outs and the bases loaded in the seventh Taylor Van't Land, grounded out to the pitcher to end game two with a 4-3 decision for the Comets.


• Cubberly (L, 6-4) started in the circle for Adrian in game two. She pitched six innings and allowed eight hits, four runs and struck out two batters. She also led the team with three hits and scored one run.

Bryanna Collins (2-for-4) and Taylor Van't Land (2-for-3) each tallied two hits in game two for the Bulldogs. Collins tallied a run and Van't Land had one RBI.

Jaime Lightner (1-for-3) and Kallie Derrer (1-for-3) were the only Adrian players to get a hit in game one.


• Payton Watson (3-for-5) led the Comets in game one with three hits and two RBIs.

• Bekah VanDam (W, 2-5) pitched seven innings in the first game and allowed two hits, two runs and struck out four batters.

• Three comets got two hits in game two.

• Gracie Boyle (W, 8-8) got the win for Olivet. Carrie Chamberlain tallied her third save of the season in relief.


• Adrian finishes the 2017 season on the road facing Alma on Thursday, April 27 before a meeting with nationally ranked Trine on Saturday, April 29.
