ADRIAN, MICH. -- The Adrian College softball team split its home-opening doubleheader with Bluffton. The Beavers took game one with a 6-3 decision before the Bulldogs scored six runs in the bottom of the 7th-inning to steal a 19-18 win in a crazy game two.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1: Bluffton 6, Adrian 3
Following a single to short by Phoebe Cole (Southgate, Mich.), Bell smacked an RBI double down the left-field line to bring Adrian within two runs of tying. Bell advanced to third before scoring on a wild pitch that put the score at 4-3, Bluffton.
The final two runs of the game were scored by the Beavers in the 7th-inning off a two-RBI double to right center.
The final scoring line for Bluffton was six runs on 10 hits and three errors; Adrian had three runs on 10 hits and one error.
Game 2: Adrian 19, Bluffton 18
The Bulldogs tallied a seven-run 2nd-inning in game two with Jaime Lightner (Eaton Rapids, Mich.), Cubberly, Paige VanAtta (East Lansing, Mich.), and Courtney Young (Lansing, Mich.) (2) each tallying RBI's.
Bluffton would cut the lead to just one run after a six-run top half of the 4th-inning. Lindsey Branscum (Clinton, Mich.) extended the Adrian lead to two runs in the bottom of the inning after she doubled to score pinch-runner Jalyn DeForest (Concord, Mich.).
The Beavers took the lead, 12-8, in the 5th-inning by scoring six runs, five of which came from two home-runs hit in the inning. Cubberly hit an RBI-double to center field that sparked a three-run bottom half of the inning as Adrian was able to cut the lead to just one run, 12-11.
Bluffton's hot-hitting continued in the 6th-inning as they homered twice more to score three of the inning's five runs to take a huge 17-11 lead with only an inning and a half to play. Lightner hit a two RBI-single to put the score at 17-13 going into the final inning.
Following a one-run top half of the 7th-inning, the Bulldogs had three outs to score at least five runs to stay alive. Hope Kapelanski (Novi, Mich.) singled to left field to score Young from third before getting thrown out at second, putting the score at 18-14. Infinity Rogers (Sand Creek, Mich.) and sister Destiny Rogers (Sand Creek, Mich.) each singled and Bell was walked to load the bases.
An error by the Bluffton first baseman would put Lightner on first and would score both Rogers sisters (18-16). Cubberly would also reach first on an error, this time by the third baseman, which would again, load the bases.
Kyleen Wilson (Windsor, Ontario) then singled up the middle to score both Lightner and Bell to tie the game at 18.
With two outs and the game tied, Young hit a walk-off single down the right-field line that scored Ashley Lenington (Southfield, Mich.) to take the game for the Bulldogs.
Adrian finished game two with 19 runs on 20 hits and four errors; the Beavers scored 18 runs on 19 hits and also had four errors.
• Cubberly (2-3), VanAtta (2-3), and Young (2-3) led Adrian with two hits in the first game.
• Bell and Cubberly tallied the only two RBI's in the game for the Bulldogs. Bell also was walked a game-high three times and scored two of Adrian's three runs.
• Lightner (3-5), Kapelanski (3-4), and I. Rogers (3-5) each tallied three hits in game two to lead the team to the win. Lightner led Adrian with four RBIs.
• Bell (1-3), Lightner, I. Rogers, and D. Rogers (2-4) scored three runs each in the second game of the day. Bell was walked a season-high five times in game two for eight walks on the day.
• Young (2-6) registered three RBIs while Wilson (2-2), Cubberly (1-5), and Branscum (2-6) each recorded two.
Rebecca Neal (L, 4-2) pitched her fifth complete game. She allowed six runs (5 earned) on 10 hits while striking out four batters and walking two.
Cubberly got the start in the circle for Adrian in game two. She pitched 3.1 innings and allowed five runs on six hits while striking out two and walking one.
Loren Vail (W, 3-1) earned the win in 3.2 innings pitched. She allowed 13 runs (8 earned) on 13 hits and five homeruns.
• Brittany Huff and Courtney Jasinski led the Beavers with two hits. Jasinski also had a team-high four RBIs.
• Mercedes Burns led in game two with four hits.
• Josie McElroy had four RBIs to lead the Beavers.
Nicole Thomas (W, 3-4) pitched all 7-innings. She allowed three runs on 10 hits while striking out one and walking five.
Alexis Montemarano pitched 2-2 innings, allowed four runs on seven hits and walked two.
Thomas entered the game late, pitching the final 1.2 innings. She allowed six runs on five hits and was granted the loss in the game to bring her season record to 3-5.
Adrian plays at Defiance in a 12:00 p.m., ET, game before facing Wis.-Platteville at 4:00 p.m., ET to finish the day.
