Softball Falls in MIAA Opening Doubleheader

GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. -- The Adrian College softball team started the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) season with an 8-0 (5-innings) and a 7-0 loss to Calvin on Friday afternoon. 


Final Scores: Game 1: Calvin 8, Adrian 0 (5-innings) | Game 2: Calvin 7, Adrian 0

Records: Calvin (15-2, 2-0 MIAA), Adrian (8-10, 0-2 MIAA)


Game One: Calvin def. Adrian 8-0 (5-innings)

The Knights scored four runs in both the first and second inning to take game one after five innings. Calvin pitcher, Anna Gernant (W, 5-1) struck out nine batters to hold the Bulldogs hitless through the five innings.

Game Two: Calvin def. Adrian 7-0

The Knights scored two runs in the first and second inning and three in the fourth for a 7-0 lead. Adrian tallied seven hits in game two but was still held scoreless by the Calvin defense.


Game Two:

Paige Cubberly (Toledo, Ohio) led Adrian with two hits in three at-bats in game two. 

Ashley Lenington (Southfield, Mich.), Bryanna Collins (Midland, Mich.), Hope Kapelanski (Novi, Mich.), Infinity Rogers (Sand Creek, Mich.), and Krista Lynch (Ypsilanti, Mich.) each tallied a hit in the final game of the day.


Game One:

Loren Vail (Belleville, Mich.) (L, 1-2) got the start for Adrian. She allowed nine hits, eight runs (7 earned), and walked two in the loss.

• Cubberly pitched 2.0 innings in relief, allowing four hits and striking out one batter.

Game Two:

Rebecca Neal (Waterford Twp., Mich.) (L, 4-5) pitched 4.0 innings as the Bulldog starter. She allowed 10 hits, seven runs (6 earned), and struck out six batters.

Emily Baldus (Saline, Mich.) pitched 3.0 innings in relief. She allowed two hits and walked three.


Game One

• Kayla Green tallied three hits in her three at-bats. She also led the Knights with two RBIs.

• Jessica Brasser (2-for-3), Grace Stock (2-for-2), and Rachel Borden (2-for-2) each recorded two hits.

• Abby Colon and Kayla Groen each led the team with two RBIs.

Game Two

Maddie DeGroot (3-for-4) led Calvin led in game two with three hits.

• Colon led with three RBIs in the victory.


Game One

• Gernant struck out nine batters in game one.

Game Two

• Ellie Borst (W, 7-1) allowed seven hits and struck out four in seven innings pitched in the game two win.


Adrian hosts cross-town rival Siena Heights on Monday, April 2, in a doubleheader that begins at 4:00 p.m., ET.
