ADA, Ohio - The Adrian College women's tennis team started off the season with a bang on Sunday, Feb. 12 with a 6-3 win over NCAA Division II Hillsdale College on a neutral court at Ohio Northern University. The Bulldogs under first-year head coach Adam Albertsen performed well in his Adrian debut by winning the final four singles matches and bottom two doubles matches en route to the 6-3 decision.
"We played well for it being the first day of competition," said Albertsen. "With five seniors in our top six, the team was eager to start the season. We set the tone against Hillsdale jumping out to a lead after doubles and carried that momentum over into singles."
The Bulldogs won just one game in the top two singles matches and then turned the tables on the Chargers winning the last four singles matches in straight sets. Sarah Brooks, Jordenne Ferenczi and Sarah Sokolowski each posted 6-1, 6-0 wins for Adrian (1-0).
In doubles, Shannon Woods and Brooks won 8-1 at two doubles while Sokolowski and Ferenczi dispatched of Olivia Renfroe and Jayme Weber 8-2 at three doubles.
Later in the day, Adrian lost a 7-2 decision to Ohio Northern University. Sokolowski picked up a team point at six singles with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Allison Talbert. The Bulldogs also won at two doubles by default.
"In the second match against Ohio Northern we competed very well but had problems finishing off games," said Albertsen. "Sarah Sokolowski had a great day going undefeated in singles play and many of the girls played very well for this early in the season."
Next match is Thursday, Feb. 16 at home against Spring Arbor inside the Merillat Center at 3:30 PM.
