ADRIAN, Mich. – The Adrian College women's volleyball team, under the guidance of head coach Elisa Joris, blanked MIAA foe Saint Mary's 3-0 today (Oct. 26) on the court inside Merillat Gymnasium by the scores of 25-14, 25-22, and 25-15. It marks the Lady Bulldogs fourth win of their last five contests.
Saint Mary's (7-17, 5-10) early 2-0 lead in the first set was the Belles' only lead of the match. After a 6-6 tie in set one, Adrian (8-19, 5-9) went on a 10-2 urn topped off by an attack error by Saint Mary's Katie Schnedier. The Lady Bulldogs maintained its lead for the first set victory.
In set two, up 9-8, Adrian would go on a 6-1 run which included a kill by freshman Linnea Berriman. Senior Joanna Slisinger earned the assist. The Belles continued to battle and managed to knot it up 20-20. Tied 21-21, Slisinger found Berriman for another kill to break the tie and put Adrian up 22-21. After two service aces by sophomore Emily Ribant, Adrian had a comfortable 24-21 lead. Berriman once again made her presence felt with set point at 24-22 and spiked the ball after receiving a nice set pass by Slisinger for the set win.
Adrian picked up where it left off in the third set and never allowed Saint Mary's close to the Lady Bulldogs' lead. Up 15-10, the 'Dogs went on an 8-0 run to go up 23-10. For match point, freshman Andrea Phillips put an exclamation mark on the match with a kill set up by junior Ashley Vernier.
Vernier led the offense with 16 assists, a career-high in a three-set match. Slisinger accounted for a season-high 14 set assists. Senior Roxanne Duran was one dig away from a double-double and recorded 10 kills to go along with nine digs. Also getting in on offense was Phillips and Berriman who had eight and seven kills, respectively. Leading the defense was sophomore Kristi Walker with 11 digs.
Next up for Adrian is Senior Day against Kalamazoo this Friday at Merillat Gymnasium. Match is slated to start at 7:00 p.m.
