ADRIAN, Mich. - After winning the first set on Saturday, it went the way of the Scots as the Adrian College volleyball team fell 3-1 at Merillat Gymnasium in what was in the end the season finale for the Bulldogs (14-16, 7-9 MIAA). Coming into today the Bulldogs needed to defeat Alma and have Hope beat Saint Mary's to gain access into the MIAA Tournament as the fourth-seed.
Saint Mary's fell in four sets to the Flying Dutch and Adrian won a 25-23 first set against Alma. With the set tied 23-23, Katie Bourbonnais served into the net and then junior Kristi Walker delivered a service ace off the hands of Bourbonnais.
The second set was also hotly contested with Alma winning it 25-23. Adrian led 17-14 in the second set before Jaycee Cole served the Scots into a 22-17 lead. Lea Klooster had four kills during the stretch which changed the momentum of the match. Adrian got within 22-21 but back-to-back attack errors by Adrian gave Alma more breathing room.
The third set was 25-13 in favor of the visitors. Adrian led 2-1 but that was it as Alma outscored Adrian 20-8 after the team's were tied 5-5. In the fourth set, Adrian trailed 7-3 early using their first timeout to stop momentum. Adrian used their second TO down 11-3 but it did not slow the Scots. Adrian got as close as 16-13 and later 18-16 but Rebecca Trosper served a couple of points and a block by Alma ended the match.
Freshman Jordan Brisson finished a great rookie campaign with 18 kills and a .333 attack percentage. No other Bulldog had more than six kills in the match. Senior Ashley Vernier led the team with 19 assists and also had four digs. Senior Stephanie Holloman had five kills and five digs. Walker led the Bulldogs with 21 digs and had two service aces.
