KALAMAZOO, Mich.- Adrian College met the Hornets of Kalamazoo College in an MIAA battle Saturday afternoon that resulted in a five set bout with each of the first four sets being decided by no more than three points. The Bulldogs lost in a fifth set heartbreaker (25-23, 22-25, 22-25, 28-26, 9-15) to fall to 5-13 overall and 1-8 in the MIAA on the season.
The first set started out with the Bulldogs taking an early 3-0 lead, but the Hornets battled back and held a late 23-22 advantage. Adrian College then rallied with a 3 point run to take an early 1-0 match lead. Kalamazoo College won each of the next two sets 25-22. In the second set, the Bulldogs fell behind early 4-10 and despite rallying with multiple three point runs; Adrian College never regained the lead. The third set was highlighted by even play with four ties and neither team taking more than a four point lead. Adrian College fought back in the fourth set to win in extra points 28-26. The set started with the Hornets taking a 4-0 lead, but the Bulldogs followed with an eight point run. Six ties followed with two lead changes, and after extra points Adrian College forced the fifth and final set. The fifth set was even to start, but Kalamazoo went on a five point run to take a commanding 12-5 lead that left no room for the Bulldogs to recover and they dropped the match 3-2.
Margo Joubran was an effective player all match leading the offense with 15 kills and finishing second on the team with 12 digs. Carly Tyson and Nicole Motz continue to lead Adrian College in assists as they combined for 47 of the 51 total Bulldog assists. Kristi Walker had another outstanding day defensively as she finished with 31 digs from her middle back position.
Adrian College will finish the day with a match vs. Finlandia at Kalamazoo College at 2 p.m.
