ANGOLA, Ind. – The Bulldogs met the Trine University Thunder Tuesday night as they looked to add to their six-match win streak. Adrian came out firing as they took the first set, but Trine responded with three straight set victories as the Bulldogs fell, 3-1. This loss leaves the overall record for Adrian at 8-6 and their record in the MIAA at 2-3.
The Bulldogs came out strong as they took the first set, 25-23. Adrian fell behind in the first set but secured the victory in come-from-behind fashion. Trine jumped out on the Bulldogs as they carried an 18-16 lead late in the set. Adrian then found their offensive stride as they would score the next three points to take the lead and followed this by scoring the final four points of the set to take the 1-0 lead.
The Thunder then responded in the second set as they evened the match by taking the set, 25-13. Trine went on an early six-point run that opened a 12-5 lead, and the Bulldogs could not overcome this deficit.
The Bulldogs looked to bounce back in the third set as they traded points with Trine early as the Thunder held just a one-point lead, 9-8, early on. Trine then opened a lead with a six-point run that left Adrian behind. The Bulldogs battled as they traded points with Trine for the remainder of the set, but the Thunder took a 2-1 match lead with a 25-17 third set victory.
The final set was highlighted by tight play as the teams played to a tie score eight times in the early going. The Thunder then pulled away with a seven-point run that left the score at 22-14 as they fought off the Bulldogs in a 25-17 fourth and final set win.
The Bulldogs were led by Cassadine Reed as she recorded seven kills and three blocks. Marisa Dion tallied 22 assists while Haley Mellon and Margo Joubran led the defense with 15 and 13 digs respectively.
Adrian will see action next when they travel to take on No. 1 Calvin College September 19 at 6:30 p.m.
