ADRIAN, Mich. – The Bulldogs met Saint Mary's Tuesday night in matchup of the teams ranked fourth and fifth in the current MIAA standings. The two teams looked to gain the edge in the conference standings as they fought to five sets before the Belles won, 3-2. This loss dropped Adrian to 9-8 overall and 3-5 in the MIAA.
The Belles took control of the match early as they jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a 25-12 set victory. The Bulldogs then responded in the second set with a 25-17 win to even the match score. The Bulldogs overcame their mistakes from the first set as they reduced their errors to just three in set two while compiling 16 kills. This back and forth play continued in set three when the Belles, once again, took the match lead with a 25-18 victory. Saint Mary's overcame the Bulldogs as the teams battled through eight ties and three lead changes before the Belles pulled away at the end. Adrian would not let Saint Mary's secure their win in four sets as the Bulldogs outmatched the Belles in set four with a commanding 25-10 win. Adrian controlled the set from the beginning as the recorded 14 kills to just two errors for the set. The Bulldogs left the Belles behind with multiple six-point runs to begin the set as the teams went to a fifth and deciding set.
The final set saw Saint Mary's take the first three points before the Bulldogs evened the score, 3-3. The Belles then slowing pulled away with multiple three point runs and Adrian could not recover as Saint Mary's took the match.
The Bulldogs will see action next on October 3 when the host No. 1 Hope College at 6:30 p.m.
