ADRIAN, Mich. - The women's volleyball team got off to a great start on Friday night, but could not hold off visiting Trine in a 3-1 defeat against the Thunder. The Thunder took both matches in the season series by 3-1 scores. The Bulldogs had their two-match win streak snapped and are now 11-12 overall and 5-8 in the MIAA.
The Bulldogs took the first set, 25-23, to surprise the Thunder (20-3, 9-3 MIAA) just as they did back on Sept. 16 in the first meeting in Angola. Adrian hit .167 in the opening set with nine kills, four errors and 30 attacks. There were seven ties and two lead changes in the first set. Adrian fell behind 8-5 early in the set after a kill by Lauren Verkamp. The Bulldogs tied the set at 14-14 after a service ace by Nicole Motz, but then saw Trine ran out to a 19-15 lead on a service ace by Bridget Marlow. The Bulldogs dug deep and scored three straight points during Margo Joubran's serve as Trine called timeout down 22-21. Jordan Brisson's kill gave Adrian a 23-22 lead and Haley Mellon followed with a service ace to set up set point. Trine got the next point but then Brisson had a kill to end the first set.
Adrian came out flat in the second set and found themselves down 9-4 before calling a timeout. The Bulldogs could not recover from a slow start in the second set and eventually went behind 23-7 before a Brisson kill stopped a long service run by Megan Verkamp. The Bulldogs scored four straight points to pull within 23-12, but Olivia Deck and Annie Phillips had kills to end the set at 25-13 and square the match at 1-1.
The third set was much like the first set as the teams kept it close early on. There were 11 ties and five lead changes in the third set as both teams did not yield an inch. Adrian took a slim 14-12 lead midway through the set, but the Thunder scored nine of the next 11 points to pull ahead 21-16 after a Megan Verkamp kill. Trine finished off the set with four more points to win 25-16 as Lauren Verkamp had three kills in that stretch.
Adrian needed to establish a rhythm early in the fourth set, but trailed 9-4 early as Adrian had a few unforced errors. The Bulldogs battled back to down 14-12 after a Cassadine Reed kill only to see the Thunder stretch their lead to 18-13 after a Laura Hartman kill. AC would get no closer than three points for the remainder of the set and fall 25-20.
Joubran recorded her fifth double-double of the season with 11 kills and 11 digs. Reed had her second-best game of the season with nine kills and also chipped in five assisted blocks. Brisson eclipsed the double-digit kill plateau for the ninth time in 2014 with 10 kills. She also contributed nine digs and seven assisted blocks. Marisa Dion led the team with 24 assists and also had five digs. Haley Mellon led the team with 12 digs. Adrian hit .067 for the match with 41 team kills. Adrian will turn around and face another top-flight MIAA squad tomorrow at 1 p.m. as they welcome fourth-ranked Calvin College (21-3, 11-1 MIAA) to town.
