Adrian, Mich. – The Adrian College women's volleyball team lost in five sets to a resilient Alma team Wednesday night in the Merillat Gym. The Bulldogs were led offensively by the trio of freshman Olivia Welch, senior Jordan Brisson and junior Sydney Martines.
Welch and Brisson both recorded double-doubles on the night. Welch tallied 19 kills and 18 digs, a season high for that category. Brisson recorded 16 kills, her season high, and 16 digs. Martines ended the night with 10 kills and a hitting percentage of .250. She is currently second in the MIAA in hitting percentage with .332.
The Scots would take the first set 25-23 before Adrian would counter by winning the next two sets to jump ahead 2-1. For the third straight match the Bulldogs had a chance to put their opponents away in the fourth set, but surrendered the set resulting in a deciding fifth set.
Alma came out fast in the fifth set taking a commanding 7-0 lead. Adrian would battle back bringing the score to 14-10 cutting the Alma lead to four points. The Bulldogs would fail to bring the score any closer with Alma winning the fifth set 15-11 and taking the match.
The win brings Alma to an MIAA record of 3-4 putting them in firmly in the sixth spot in the standings. Adrian remains in the third spot with a 4-3 conference record.
The Bulldogs will hit the road to compete in the Illinois Wesleyan Tournament starting Friday, October 2 through Saturday October 3. Their first match will be against hosting Illinois Wesleyan. Match start time is set for 4:30 p.m.
