FREELAND, Mich. - The Adrian College women's volleyball team was picked to finish third in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) preseason coaches' poll release today (Thursday, August 18, 2016) by the league office.
Defending regular season and MIAA tournament champion Calvin earned eight of the nine possible first place votes and earned 64 points to top the 2016 preseason poll. Hope received one first place vote and earned the second spot with 57 points. The Bulldogs earned eight points less than Hope (49) to gain the third spot on the poll. The final team chosen to make the postseason was Albion with a total of 35 points. Alma trails Albion for the fifth spot with 34 points. Saint Mary's and Trine are tied in the sixth spot with 30 points. Olivet (14 points) and Kalamazoo (11 pooints) fill the final two spots of the poll.
Head Coach David Kwan enters his fifth season at the helm of the Bulldog women's volleyball team. Adrian is coming off the best season in the Coach Kwan Era with a 14-13 overall record and a 9-7 MIAA record that had the team finish third in the conference. The top three finish was the first for the Bulldogs since 2007.
Adrian returns two of its top hitters in Olivia Welch (sophomore, Vicksburg, Mich.) and Sydney Martines (senior, Concord, Mich.). Haley Mellon (junior, Adrian, Mich.) joins Welch as two of the top defenders for the Bulldogs. Cassadine Reed (senior, Southfield, Mich.) anchors the Adrian front line after a career year in total blocks last season, a total that lead the team and had her finish in the top three in the conference.
The Bulldogs start the season traveling to St. Louis, Mo., to compete in the Baden Invitational hosted by Washington University. Game one of that tournament is against Hanover on Friday, September 2 at 5:00 p.m. EST.
Adrian's first home match will take place on Wednesday, September 7 when the Bulldogs host MIAA foe Trine at 6:30 p.m. EST.
