Bulldogs Start Season 2-0 After Two Five Set Victories in St. Louis

ST. LOUIS – The Adrian women's volleyball team start the season 2-0 after winning both games during day one of the Baden Invitational hosted by Washington University in St. Louis, Mo. The Bulldogs defeated Hanover in their first game of the day coming down 2-1 and winning the final two sets on the way to a 3-2 victory (25-22, 24-26, 25-17, 25-21, 18-16). The Fighting Engineers of Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology forced a fifth set before Adrian could put them away 3-2 (24-26, 30-28, 25-18, 16-25, 15-13).

Game 1


Final Score: Adrian 3, Hanover 2 (25-22, 24-26, 25-17, 25-21, 18-16)

Location: St. Louis, Mo. (Field House)

Records: Adrian (1-0), Hanover (1-1)


• Adrian jumped out to a 1-0 lead, winning the first set 25-22

• The Bulldogs had their best attack percentage of the match in the first set (.312) by recording 16 kills with only six errors on 32 total attacks

• Hanover would even • things up winning the second set 26-24 before taking the lead following the third set winning 25-17

• Adrian would rally back to force the decisive fifth set, beating the Panthers 25-21 in the fourth set

• The Bulldogs took a 4-0 lead at the beginning of the fifth set, their biggest lead of the final set

• The teams would tie four times before Adrian would pull out the victory winning the set 18-16 to put the Bulldogs at 1-0 on the season


• Senior Margo Joubran led Adrian on offense and defense with 17 kills and 15 digs

• Joubran would finish the first match with an attack percentage of .447

Sydney Martines and Jenai White also contributed on offense with 11 kills each

Marisa Dion paced the Bulldog offense with 52 assists

Haley Mellon helped Joubran lead the defense with 15 digs

Carlie Fernandez also tallied 13 digs for the match


• Kelsey Brandvik (12 kills) and Kristen Goben (11 kills) led the Panther offense

• Abby Crump (20 assists) and Haley Alexander (18 assists) kept the offense rolling

• Jordan Benge led the defense with 24 digs

Final Score: Adrian 3, Rose-Hulman 2 (24-26, 30-28, 25-18, 16-25, 15-13)

• Rose-Hulman took the early 1-0 lead after beating Adrian in the first set 26-24

• The Bulldogs would win the next two sets to take a 2-1 lead

• The Fighting Engineers would win the fourth set to force the deciding set

• Both teams would trade points in the fifth set with Adrian pulling away to an 11-7 lead before finishing the game by winning the set 15-13


• Joubran led the Bulldogs again on offense with 20 kills (.204 attack percentage)

Cassadine Reed and Martines also contributed offensively with 14 and 11 kills respectively

Marisa Dion broke 50 assists for the second straight match tallying 54

• Mellon was the defensive leader with 24 digs

• Fernandez (15 digs), Joubran (14 digs) and Olivia Welch (14 digs) also contributed on defense for Adrian


• Emily McLendon led Rose-Hulman with 13 kills

• Adekite Oladipupo, Becca Poppel and Sydney Griffith all recorded 11 kills

• Alison Rogozinski paced the Fighting Engineer offense with 32 assists

• Katie Orbeta also tallied 19 assists

• Oladipupo and Gabi Razma led the team defensively with 24 and 23 digs respectively


• Adrian will play two matches again tomorrow in day two of the Baden Invitational

• The Bulldogs will play host and sixth ranked Washington University first at 10:30 a.m. and will finish the tournament with Knox at 1:30 a.m.
