ADRIAN, Mich. – The Adrian College women's volleyball team dropped its first contest of the season to Albion on the final day of the Adrian Bulldogs Classic Tournament.

The Bulldogs were incredibly strong through sets one and two, winning them by marks of 25-17 and 25-22. The largest lead of set one came at points 22-13 as Emily Haas recorded one of her three service aces on the day. Match two was not as easy going for the hosts, as the score was knotted four separate times during the late goings of the stanza. All thoughts of a comeback in the set were put to bed as Liz Susitko was able to sneak a pass from Carly Thomas down to the hardwood.

Adrian's undoing began in the of the third set, as the visiting Britons owned a 21-16 advantage, before the Bulldogs looked to attempt a comeback of their own on a four point run to put the game within reach. Albion was able to force a fourth set, on a kill to make it 25-23.

The fourth set started much the same, with the hosts down 6-2 after opening a quick 2-0 lead, forcing an Adrian timeout. A four point run to bring the game to 15-21 forced Albion to call a timeout of its own, hoping to stall the hosts' momentum. An unsuccessful attempt was met by two kills by Alex Tobler to bring the score within three. The visitor pulled away with the set, forcing a fifth stanza, using the back-and-forth of errors and a Ava Smith service ace.

Although both teams were visibly tired, the last 32 points saw much intensity on both sides of the court. Despite opening up with a 2-0 lead, Adrian was pushed to use a timeout as Albion took a 6-4 lead. The brief breather gave the Bulldogs a power surge as the took a 8-7 leads, resulting in the switching of sides. Both sides were desperate for the victory, tying at 14-14 and 15-15, with Adrian reaching the 15 mark faster. The Britons had just enough fuel left in the tank to end the duel with a pair of kills.

  • Setter Liz Susitko topped yesterday's assist total with an impressive 43. She also added six digs, five kills, one block assist and a service ace of her own.
  • Leading the team in kills was Alex Tobler, who posted an impressive 15. Tobler also had 13 digs, two assists and one block assist.
  • Grace Welch proved herself on the court and stat sheet, posting 14 kills, 15 digs, two block assists, one service ace and one assist. She was all over the court and helped her team out of several rough patches with her strength on the net and in the back court.
