TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -
The Adrian College baseball team continued on their roll through the early portion of their schedule with a 12-3 win over #13 Illinois Wesleyan on Saturday from Art Nehf Field on the campus of Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. The Bulldogs completed a two-game sweep of the nationally-ranked Titans after a 9-2 win yesterday and have now picked up four wins against top 25 teams in Division III this season.
The formula was the same again for the Bulldogs - good starting pitching and an offense that scores in bunches. Alex Webster took care of the starting pitching aspect with six solid innings allowing five hits and only one run improving to 2-0. Webster faced 23 batters and allowed no walks with two strikeouts. Eric Zatkin, Matt Tuttle and Andrew Anderson all threw one inning and allowed four combined hits and one earned run the rest of the way.
The offense jumped all over the Titan starter with three runs in the top of the first. Todd Meyers led off the game with a double and advanced to third on a wild pitch just after Kris Powell reached by getting hit by a pitch. Bobby Rickstad then brought both men home on a two-run double making it 2-0 with no outs. Brett Miskokomon hit a sacrifice fly to right field which scored Rickstad for the 3-0 lead.
Adrian cushioned their lead at 8-0 with a five-run fourth frame. Jaymz Zokoe hit a sacrifice fly to center field with the bases loaded scoring Alex Cowart with the fourth run. Meyers singled home Steve Vanderheyden on the next at-bat with the fifth run. Freshman Jake Cappelletty hit a two-out, two-run single which scored Meyers and Alexander Younce to make it 7-0. Powell scored on a wild pitch for the eighth run of the game. Adrian scored all five runs unearned off the Titans in the inning.
AC struck for a single run in the sixth on an RBI double by Cowart and added three more in the eighth to lead 12-1. Cowart delivered an RBI single and Brian Bilius scored on a double play ball with no outs for the final run. Meyers went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and reached base five times including two hit by the pitch plate appearances. Cappelletty went 2-for-4 with two RBI's and eight putouts at first base. He currently leads the team with a .391 batting average. Cowart went 3-for-5 with a run scored and two RBI's. Adrian has now collected 10 or more hits in six of their eight games this season and is averaging 7.9 runs per game this season (7-1).
