What is Special Olympics?

Special Olympics is also known as the P.R.I.D.E club, Promoting the Rights of Individuals Everywhere. As a club we are a part of the Special Olympic College program. These programs are made up of three core elements: Inclusive Sports, Youth Leadership, and opportunities for Full Campus Involvement. We incorporate these three core elements into our club by practicing different sports such as basketball and soccer. We make these sports inclusive by ensuring all athletes are included, no matter their skill or ability level. Youth leadership is encouraged through group leaders who help run warm-ups and drills. Finally, full campus involvement is supported by different sports teams on campus who volunteer to participate in our Sunday practices. 

As a club, we encourage crossing boundaries and disciplines by pushing our club to expand further into the community and invite more individuals to join us. We challenge our athletes to think outside the box and learn new sports and everyday life skills such as teamwork and communication. Most of our athletes live in Lenawee County and are between the ages of 20-27. Our organization’s goal is to connect college students and individuals with intellectual disabilities through sports to build friendships and help lead the social justice movement of Special Olympics. We meet biweekly on Sundays for an hour. We rotate through different sports such as soccer, basketball, chair hockey, and kickball. Additionally, we host and attend a variety of events such as; the sweetheart prom, Clark Lake polar plunge, a basketball tournament, and a soccer tournament!
