ADRIAN, Mich. -
The Adrian College baseball team got back to .500 (5-5) with a big win against Defiance College on Wednesday night. The Bulldogs won the home opener 14-4.
Jake Cappelletty gave Adrian a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning by hitting a monster home run to right centerfield.
The Yellow Jackets came back to take the lead in the top of the third inning. Kirk Jesse picked up 2 RBI's with a triple. Aaron Stewart hit an RBI single to give DC a 3-1 lead. Stewart eventually ended the inning by being picked off.
Adrian scored three runs of their own in the bottom of the third. Todd Meyers hit a double to start off the inning for AC. Steve Vanderheyden impacted the inning with a 2 RBI single to left field to give Adrian a 4-3 lead.
The Bulldogs never looked back once they regained the lead. AC scored at least one run in every inning except the first.
Joe Dubina led off the fouth inning with a double for Adrian. Andrew Anderson followed him in the lineup with a single through the right side of the infield that allowed Dubina to reach third. Defiance made a pitching change after the single from Anderson. Meyers delivered his second double of the game against the new pitcher. Dubina and Anderson both scored off the hit to increase the Adrian lead to 6-3.
The Bulldogs put the game away in the bottom of the sixth inning. They scored five runs off three hits to increase the lead to 12-4. Alex Cowart and Cappelletty each doubled in the sixth. AC ended the game by scoring a run in both the seventh and eighth inning.
Todd Meyers was 4-for-4 from the plate. The senior hit three doubles, scored three runs, and also reached on a walk. Cowart, Vanderheyden and Cappelletty all had great games. Cowart went 3-for-4 with 2 RBI's, while Cappelletty ended the game 2-for-4 with 3 RBI's. Vanderheyden led the team with 4 RBI's after going 3-for-3 for AC.
The Bulldogs used a variety of pitchers against Defiance. Ryan Domschot earned the win on the mound. He is now 3-0 early in the 2009 season. Nick Vandike finished the game on the mound for Adrian. Vandike allowed two hits through two innings. He also had two strikeouts.
The Bulldogs will return to action on March 21st with a game against Concordia at 1:00 p.m.
