ADRIAN, Mich. -
The round one battle between in-state rivals Adrian College and Oakland University went to the 'Dogs on Thursday night as Dan Phelps' bunch pulled out a 6-3 win over the Golden Grizzlies. The two teams will square off again tonight at 8:40 p.m. in Rochester at the Onyx.
Adrian (18-8-0-1) spotted Oakland a pair of goals but found their scoring touch in the latter stages of the second period. Kyle McMahon notched both goals for the Golden Grizzlies with the first coming on the power play to give OU a 1-0 lead after the first period.
McMahon's second on the night with 13:39 left in the second made Adrian stand up and shake off the cobwebs. Randy Cox scored his fifth of the season with 6:22 remaining in the period to cut the lead to 2-1 with assists from Spencer Bonomo and Kevin Sunde.
Captain Jared Semple tied the game at 2-2 with his 17th goal of the season with 1:54 left in the period with an assist from Justen Mitchell. Adrian then took advantage of Oakland mistakes by scoring two short-handed goals back-to-back at the end of the second and beginning of the third periods which took the wind out of Oakland's sails.
Tom Ciaverilla scored unassisted with 58 seconds to go in the second to give Adrian a 3-2 lead after 40 minutes. Jack Goodell scored six seconds into the third for his fourth goal of the season to give AC a 4-2 advantage.
Kevin Kranker got the Golden Grizzlies within a goal with 8:25 to play but Adrian closed the door with two goals in the final 2:50 for the three-goal win. Sunde scored his 14th of the season with an assist from Cox and Kyle Peterson scored his third of the season with 1:05 to go with an assist from Mitchell.
Mitchell, Sunde, Bonomo and Cox each had two points for the Bulldogs. Jason Spada picked up an assist on Goodell's short-hander and also made 27 saves to improve to 2-0 since joining the team in January.
