Men's ACHA Division 1 Ice Hockey

Bulldogs split weekend series with Grizzlies

ADRIAN, MICH.-The ACHA Division I team took on the Grizzlies from Oakland University this weekend splitting a home and home series with them.  The Bulldogs hit the road Friday night for the first half of the weekend series and came away with a 5-4 shootout victory.  Freshman Shamus Finnerty got the scoring started with a powerplay goal just under five minutes into the game.  The Grizzlies would tie the game up later in the period but Sophomore Spencer Jordan scored less than a minute after the Grizzly goal to put the Bulldogs up 2-1 going into the first intermission.  Junior Kyle Peterson scored about halfway through the second the push the Bulldog lead to 3-1.  The lead would hold till the 3 minute mark of the period when Oakland took advantage of an Adrian penalty and scored a powerplay goal to cut the lead to one.  In the third the Grizzlies used two goals in the first six minutes of the period to take a 4-3 lead.  The lead would last until Jordan Spear scored with just under 4 minutes remaining in the period to tie things up.  The two teams would finish regulation tied at 4-4.  They would go into a 5 minute sudden death overtime period in which neither team would score.  After no goals in the overtime the two teams went into a 3 man shootout.  Shooting for the Bulldogs was Freshman Max Gavin, Freshman Logan Blackwell, and Spencer Jordan.  Jordan and Gavin scored on their attempts helping the Bulldogs to a win.

Saturday afternoon saw a different outcome as the Bulldogs lost 4-1 at home.  The two teams battled through the first period but no one was able to score on either goalie and the two teams went into the second period the same way the first period started 0-0.  Oakland exploded for three unanswered goals in the second and took a 3-0 lead into the third period.  The third period would see them build on the lead before the Bulldogs would cut into it.  Oakland scored about six minutes into the game to go up 4-0.  Freshman Joe Anstett ended Oakland's bid for a shutout as he scored the Bulldogs only goal of the game on the powerplay with 12 minutes remaining.  Matt Anderson played strong in net for the Bulldogs stopping 17 of 21 shots on Friday and 26 of 30 on Saturday.  The loss drops Adrian to 16-4 on the season and 10-3 in conference play.

The Bulldogs return to action Tuesday night as the Eastern Michigan Eagles travel to Adrian for a 7:00 p.m. faceoff.
