ADRIAN, Mich. – The Division 1 ACHA team kept rolling through conference play this past weekend (Jan. 22-23) by sweeping both games of a home-and-home series with the Eastern Michigan Eagles by scores of 4-1, and 10-4.
The Bulldogs got the weekend started as they traveled to Ypsilanti for a Saturday night faceoff. The Eagles got out to an early 1-0 lead when they managed to beat Matt Anderson with six minutes remaining in the period. The Bulldogs and Anderson shut the door for the rest of the game however, after giving up the early tally. Spencer Bonomo provided the offense that the Bulldogs needed to get going in the first scoring two goals 1:16 apart near the end of the period. Bonomo's goals concluded the first period and sent the two teams into the first intermission with Adrian holding a 2-1 slight advantage.
Both teams came out firing and ready to go in the second period but neither team was able to slip one past the other team's goaltender. In the third period the Bulldogs put the game away getting goals from Joe Anstett and Jared Semple to close out the scoring for the game. As the final horn sounded the Bulldogs had pulled out a 4-1 victory over the Eagles. Anderson made 12 saves on the night to earn the victory.
Sunday afternoon saw a different game as the Bulldogs offense was led by sophomores Bonomo and Kevin Sunde who each recorded a hat trick. A five goal first period set the tone and paced Adrian through the game. Justen Mitchell opened the scoring two minutes into the game, but his goal would quickly be answered by the Eagles. Max Gavin, Bonomo, and Sunde all scored to round out the period as Adrian scored four unanswered goal to put the score at 5-1 at the end of the first.
In the second, Eastern netted the first goal of the period but Adrian answer back as both teams traded goals in the period. All four goals scored by both sides were all on the power play. Logan Blackwell scored early in the period followed by Bonomo's second goal of the game in just over two minutes left. At the end of two periods the bulldogs led 7-3.
The third period was again dominated by the Bulldogs as they outscored the Eagles 3-1. Bonomo and Sunde finished off their hat tricks and Ryan Bachman added a goal of his own. Top performers for the Bulldogs from the weekend were Bonomo with five goals and four assists and Sunde with three goals and three assists. Anderson made 19 saves to earn the sweep over the Eagles.
The Bulldogs are back in action this week as they host Western Michigan on Thursday, January 27 at 7:00 p.m. before traveling to take on the Stallions on Friday in another important conference matchup.
