TEMPE, Ariz. – The fifth ranked Adrian College ACHA Division 1 team split a pair of games with the sixth ranked Arizona State University on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Bulldogs record now stands at 19-5 on the season.
The first game of the series saw both teams go on scoring streaks throughout the game. It was the Bulldogs who put a run together early on in the game scoring two minutes apart on goals by Tom Ciaverilla and Alex Norman five minutes into the game. The Sun Devils battled back and scored three goals to end the first period up 3-2. The second period was all Adrian as Spencer Bonomo and Kevin Sunde scored goals to give the Bulldogs the lead again. Ciaverilla netted a power play goal with seven minutes left in the game. Arizona State scored with about a minute remaining in the game, but it was not enough as the Bulldogs pulled out the win 5-4. In goal, Matt Anderson made 28 saves to earn the victory.
In the second game of the series, the Bulldogs and Sun Devils again would trade a series of goals throughout the game. The Bulldogs once again came out ready to play and again scored the first two goals of the game at the 9:00 mark by Bonomo and at 7:56 on the power play by Sunde. ASU rallied to score two of their own goals about a minute apart. Before the first period could end, Tristan Musser netted another Bulldogs power play goal with only 56 seconds left as Adrian entered the first intermission up 3-2.
Max Gavin scored an unassisted goal at 12:07 to put Adrian up by two. The Sun Devils would counter with a goal at 7:39 to head into the final period with Adrian leading 4-3. The final period did not go in the Bulldogs favor. With only 37 seconds left in the game, ASU scored to tie the game. Looking like the game would head into overtime, the Sun Devils again stung the Bulldogs as Dave Jantzie scored with only nine seconds reaming in the game to give ASU the lead and the 5-4 victory. Matt Anderson had a repeat performance in goal making 28 saves.
The Bulldogs will travel south to take on the #24 University of Arizona in a two-game series starting Friday, January 7 at 9:30 est.
