ADRIAN, Mich. - It was a game to forget for the Adrian College baseball team on Wednesday night (Apr. 6) as they dropped a 6-5 non-conference decision to Defiance College (5-17) under the lights at Nicolay Field.
Adrian (12-6) jumped ahead 4-0 after three innings and looked to be in control, but the Yellow Jackets scored four times in the top of the fourth to tie the game at 4-4. The Adrian defense let them down with two big errors in the inning. Brent Greenwood gave up just one earned run in the inning.
Defiance then took the lead with a run in the fifth and tacked on another one in the eighth to lead 6-4 and run off six straight runs. The Bulldogs went into the bottom of the ninth and put their first two hitters on base. Brian Bilius led off with a walk and then Nate Sarkissian singled to right allowing Bilius to get to third with no outs. Jake Cappelletty hit a sacrifice fly to shallow left and Bilius scored to get the Bulldogs within one. Jake Taylor then buckled down and got Kyle Strawn and Mitch Sroka to strike out to end the game. Taylor picked up his second save of the season for Defiance.
Adrian used nine different pitchers throwing each for an inning. Sean Hartman took the loss (0-1) as he threw when Defiance scored the go-ahead run in the fifth. Zach Robbins got the start and struck out the side with a walk in his inning of work. Jason Fryman also worked a hitless sixth inning with a strikeout. Lucas Willitzer stranded runners on second and third in the ninth inning and allowed no hits. He did hit a batter and the other runner reached on an error.
Bilius finished 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. Sarkissian went 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI's. Cappelletty and Sroka each had a pair of hits with Cappelletty collecting his seventh double of the year. Adrian pounded out 12 hits against three Yellow Jacket hurlers. Alex Schomaeker got the win (1-0) for Defiance going two innings in the fourth and fifth. He allowed three hits with no walks and no strikeouts.
