Bulldogs Suffer First Loss of Season to Capital 13-11

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - Yesterday it was the Adrian College baseball scored 10 runs in an inning to propel them to an extra innings win over Capital. On Friday, Mar. 2 the Crusaders returned the favor with 10 runs in the top of the seventh to take a 13-10 lead after Adrian looked like they were going to cruise after leading 10-3 heading into the top half of the seventh.

Junior righty Josh Burd shook off a shaky start in his first outing of the season and went 6.1 innings allowing five hits and three earned runs. Burd walked a pair of struck out four Crusaders for a no-decision. Adrian's big inning came with a five-spot in the bottom of the sixth inning. Freshman Zach Kolvey had a pinch-hit RBI single to start the scoring for the Bulldogs. Ryan Sigler then followed with another pinch-hit RBI single to right which scored Jamey Sackett who pinch ran for Kolvey and then remained in the game behind the dish. The big blow was Adrian's first home run of the season and it came off the bat of Dom Pompey. His two-run jack gave Adrian a 10-3 lead.

Capital chased Burd in the seventh and Adrian brought in Zach Robbins for his first appearance of the season. Robbins lasted just three batters and gave up three runs, all unearned. Mike Osterman threw to six batters of which four reached base via a hit. Josh Richardson closed out the deal getting the final out of the top of the seventh with Capital now leading 13-10. Adrian got one run back in the bottom of the seventh. Clay Paul singled to shortstop to start the inning and Garrett Green followed with an RBI double to center to cut the lead to two. Jacob Thuman entered in the seventh and after giving up the one run he closed the door as Adrian went in order in the eighth and stranded runners on first and third in the ninth.

Osterman was saddled with the loss in relief going to 0-1. Thuman earned a save and Kevin Brennan got the win despite throwing just 0.2 innings and giving up three earned runs. Cody Meyer finished 2-for-3 with a pair of runs batted in. He is hitting .409 through the first six games of the season. Paul ended the game 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored. He is 5-for-9 early at the plate this season. Sam Fischer continues to impress at the bottom of the order with two hits in three at-bats and scored three times. He is tied for the team lead with nine runs scored this season.

The Bulldogs will conclude its spring trip tomorrow (Mar. 3) as they take the diamond against Medaille beginning at 10 AM.
