Baseball Suffers First Loss, 15-8, to Moravian

Box Score

PUNTA GORDA, Fla. - The Adrian College baseball team evened its spring trip record at 1-1 after a 15-8 loss to Moravian College on Tuesday morning at the Snowbird Classic. The Bulldogs certainly did not play their normal brand of baseball as pitching and defense were sadly absent under the Florida sun. Adrian gave up 15 runs in a game for the first time in almost four years to the day. The Bulldogs lost 16-4 against the University of Dallas on Mar. 6, 2009. The team also committed six errors which led to seven unearned runs.

Sophomore Eric Schmidt got his first start of the season and lost for the first time in his Bulldog career after going 9-0 on the mound a year ago. Schmidt gave up 10 hits and four earned runs in 3.1 innings and struck out two Greyhounds. His counterpart Anthony Zaloga went 6.1 innings to pick up the win. Zaloga allowed six hits and five earned runs with a walk and five punchouts.

Moravian led 13-0 at one point before Adrian answered with eight consecutive runs. The Bulldogs scored three times in the bottom of the sixth and then tacked on five more runs in the seventh to cut the deficit to 13-8. Moravian added two more runs in the top of the ninth to seal the win. The Greyhounds had 17 hits against six Adrian hurlers. Scott Williams, Austin Abbott and Dan Heatherly each gave up no earned runs out of the bullpen pitching at least one inning. Williams went 1.2 innings and walked two with two strikeouts. Freshman Tommy Eng gave up the final two runs in the ninth. Ben Hammel closed the door on Adrian for the Greyhounds pitching the final 2.1 innings and allowing no hits with three strikeouts.

Junior Sam Fischer went 2-for-5 with two home runs and three RBI's in the leadoff spot. Fischer drilled a leadoff homer to left in the sixth and then delivered a two-run bomb to left with one out in the seventh. Junior R.J. Rios went 1-for-4 with two RBI's. Senior Anthony Sergi came into the game at catcher in the sixth and laced a RBI triple in his first at-bat. He later collected his second RBI with a groundout in the seventh. Adrian managed seven hits on the day.
