ADRIAN, Mich. - The third-ranked Adrian College men's ACHA Division I hockey team twice took three-goal leads against the Lakers of Mercyhurst on Saturday night and then held on for a narrow 6-5 win at Arrington Ice Arena to move to 12-0 on the season.
Each team got on the board in the first period as Kevin Valasek scored on a power-play goal for Mercyhurst and Alex Dobrzeniecki (Fishers, Ind.) answered for Adrian to make the score 1-1 after 20 minutes.
The Bulldogs got the offense cranked up in the second period with three straight markers to take a 4-1 lead. Bobby Bodette (Garden, Mich.), with an assist from Matt Zaremba (Gaylord, Mich.), scored the first goal 4:46 into the period and Brad Kobryn (Brighton, Ont.) scored again for Adrian 26 seconds later, assisted by Chris Derochie (Rossland, B.C.) and Justin Fisher (Flushing, Mich.). Freshman Zach McKay (Brighton, Mich.), then scored Adrian's last goal of the period on assists from Nick Sakellaropoulos (Tinley Park, Ill.) and Adam Bristol (Carmel, Ind).
Mercyhurst then retaliated with an even-strength goal from Joseph Tadiello and a power-play marker from Jesse Valasek to inch back into the game at 4-3.
Derochie and Zaremba gave the Bulldogs breathing room by scoring a pair of power-play goals to start the third period. Derochie unassisted and Zaremba, with assists from Dobrzeniecki and Nick Goettel (Davidson, Mich.) to make the score 6-3.
Once again, the Lakers fought back, taking advantage of a five-minute major penalty to Adrian's Bristol to score two power-play goals by Greg Marsch and Tadiello, but the Lakers were unable to gain an equalizer, as Adrian goaltender Matt Schnoes (Plymouth, Mich.) held them off to earn the win with 20 saves in the contest.
Mercyhurst and Adrian will conclude their two-game series on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. at Arrington Ice Arena.
