ADRIAN, Mich. - The Adrian College ACHA Division I men's hockey team was back on the winning track on Thursday, using a three-goal second period to gain an advantage and then hold on for a 3-2 win over Oakland University.
Both teams were held scoreless through the first 20 minutes, but the Bulldogs got their offense going early in the second period as Brad Kobryn (Burlington, Ont.) took advantage of a Grizzly penalty at the end of the first period to score a power play goal just 1:53 into the second for his 23rd of the year.
Kobryn was back for more at 9:17 with his second goal of the game to make the score 2-0, with assists from Darren Tarasoff (Castlegar, B.C.) and Chris Derochie (Rossland, B.C.). Moments later, Adrian was back on the power play and connected to make the score 3-0 as Bobby Bodette (Garden, Mich.) turned on the red light for the Bulldogs, with assists from Alex Dobrzeniecki (Fishers, Ind.) and Matt Zaremba (Gaylord, Mich.). The goal was Bodette's 12th of the campaign.
Oakland's leading scorer William Ballent then led an Oakland comeback, scoring at the 10:07 mark to make the score 3-1 at the end of two periods.
The score remained 3-1 until Ballent got loose to score a breakaway goal with just 4:02 remaining in the contest. The Grizzlies had several opportunities in the final moments, including a power play for the final 27 seconds, but Adrian goaltender Austyn Roudebush (Toledo, Ohio) made several fine saves down the stretch to secure the win.
In all, Roudebush stopped 24 Oakland shots while his counterpart, Cory Hirschuck, was much busier at the other end making 42 saves for Oakland.
The two teams will conclude their two-game series Saturday night in Rochester, with faceoff at the Oynx slated for 8:20 p.m.
