Robinson and Relievers Limit JCU in 8-1 Win

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - The Bulldog baseball team picked up its first win of 2014 on Tuesday with an 8-1 win over John Carroll University in the Snowbird Classic. After a tough loss last night in extra innings, the Bulldogs came out and left little doubt against the Blue Streaks.

Senior Rylie Robinson started his final season in fine fashion throwing six innings in the win. Robinson tossed 84 pitches and allowed six hits with one run, two walks and two strikeouts. He now is 17-5 with a 2.31 ERA in his career. Greg Sombati tossed an inning of work getting on the mound for the second straight day. Sombati allowed a hit in the seventh with no runs. Zach Ranney threw the eighth and ninth and allowed one hit and no runs in his first appearance.

Mark Materise got the start for John Carroll and went 5.2 innings allowing seven hits and five earned runs. Materise is now 1-1 on the season and JCU fell to 2-5. Tyler Ferretti gave up a run in 1.1 innings and Anthony Libertini threw a scoreless eighth with a strikeout.

JCU scored first in the second inning on a RBI ground-rule double by David Lykens who finished 2-for-4. Adrian then rattled off eight straight runs. The Bulldogs scored once in the second, two in the fourth and sixth and three more in the seventh. In the sixth inning, the first two batters recorded outs and then Zach Kolvey and Drew Shutes hit back-to-back home runs. Kolvey homered to right center followed by Shutes going to left.

In the seventh inning, Mitch Stefanski had a two-run triple to center and R.J. Rios had a RBI single to center. Rios finished with a 2-for-4 day with a run scored. Sam Fischer had a double and run scored in four at-bats. Ben Yax had a good day at the plate and in the field. He went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI batting in the eighth spot and also had seven putouts and one assist with no errors. Shutes also had a strong debut for the Bulldogs in left field going 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. Adrian battles familiar foe Heidelberg tomorrow at 12:30 p.m.
