ADRIAN, Mich.--The Adrian College ACHA Division I men's hockey team suffered its first defeat of the season on Friday night as the Bulldogs were shut out by Western Michigan University, 2-0, at Arrington Ice Arena.
The Broncos scored all the goals they would need in the first period when defenseman Matt Shultz let go a drive from the point that was tipped by forward Brandon Grillo over the shoulder of Adrian junior goaltender Matthew Schnoes.
Western added to their lead in the third period when forward Casey O'Doherty was awarded a penalty shot and connected for his seventh goal of the year.
The real story of the game, however, was the play of Western goaltender Brandon Haase, who was spectacular in the Broncos cage, stopping 40 shots and shutting down the Adrian offense, which entered the game averaging four goals per game.
The Bulldogs were especially frustrated by the Broncos on the power play, where Adrian went 0-for-8 despite entering the game with an efficiency rate of 26.3 percent with the man advantage.
The loss drops Adrian to 4-1 on the season, while Western Michigan improves to 6-6. The two teams will conclude their two-game series Saturday afternoon at Lawson Ice Arena in Kalamazoo with the opening face-off slated for 3:30 p.m.
