WASHINGTON, Pa. - The Bulldog baseball team dropped their opening game of the Mideast Regional by a final of 5-1 against Shenandoah on Wednesday afternoon. The fifth-seeded Hornets had the timely hits while the second-seeded Bulldogs could not get the big hit. Adrian stranded 10 runners on base including the bases loaded in the third. They also had chances in the fourth and sixth innings to make some noise.

Senior Eric Schmidt pitched eight innings and took the loss (9-2) for the Bulldogs. He scattered 10 hits and walked one with four strikeouts. Freshman Collin Korte tossed two-thirds of an inning in the ninth and gave up two runs. Sophomore Zach Dunn recorded the final out on two pitches.

Senior John Joseph went 3-for-4 batting in the ninth spot. Junior Jeff Gertley hit his 10th home run of the season in the second inning to plate the team's lone run. Adrian kept their 1-0 lead into the fifth when the Hornets tied the game. They would also score runs in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings. Darrell Thompson got the win for Shenandoah (7-1) throwing 117 pitches and yielding seven hits, three walks and striking out five. Ryan Mossman got his fourth save of the season throwing two scoreless innings.

Freshman catcher Frank Resto went 2-for-4 and Tommy Eng collected the other hit for Adrian. The Bulldogs will play Washington and Jefferson on Thursday at noon in an elimination game.
