Men's ACHA Division 1 Ice Hockey

Bulldogs Sweep No. 3 Stony Brook in Battle of Nationally-Ranked Top 10 Squads

ADRIAN, Mich.--The Adrian College American Collegiate Hockey Association Division I men's hockey team roared from behind on Friday night, erasing a two-goal deficit to upset the No. 3-ranked Stony Brook Seawolves and remain unbeaten with a 4-3 shootout win at Arrington Ice Arena. The Bulldogs won again less than 24 hours later over Stony Brook, 4-0, on Saturday afternoon.

After fighting to a 1-1 tie in the first period, with Alex Miller scoring for the Seawolves and Marcel Kottek connecting for the 10th-ranked Bulldogs, Adrian fell behind in the second period, as Devon Palmieri and Brendan Calello connected for power-play goals to give Stony Brook a 3-1 lead. It looked like the Seawolves would maintain of the two goal advantage until Adrian's Sam Johnston scored with just six seconds remaining in the second period, with assists from JP Grineau and Ranier Glimpel to bring the Bulldogs within proximity after 40 minutes.

Senior forward Ted Anstett scored the only goal of the third period, with assists from CJ Nicholson and Kottek, to tie the score at three and send the game into overtime. The five-minute overtime session did not provide a winner, forcing the game to be decided by a shootout.

Stony Brook goaltender Tyler Huberty and Adrian's Matt Schnoes then took center stage, shutting the door on all shooters in the first three rounds of the shootout. The deadlock was finally broken by Stony Brook's Antonio Baccari in round four, leaving Marcus Rose a do or die shot for the Bulldogs. Rose would not disappoint the Bulldog faithful firing the puck over Huberty's right shoulder to tie the game once again and send the shootout to a fifth-round. Schnoes then stoned the Seawolves Edward Osowski, leaving it up to the Bulldogs Ranier Glimpel, who brought the contest to an end slipping the puck between Huberty's legs and into the cage for the victory.

The Bulldogs outshot the Seawolves 49-39 on the evening as Schnoes made 36 saves as well as an additional four saves in the shootout.

Adrian ran its season record to 4-0 on Saturday afternoon as it defeated nationally-ranked Stony Brook for a second consecutive time at Arrington.

The Bulldogs held the Seawolves to just 19 shots as freshman Michael Barrett earned his first shutout between the pipes for Adrian.

Neither team could get much going on offensively in a scoreless first period, but Adrian's Josh Hosking gave the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead with the only goal of the second period with assists from Nick Goettle and Marcus Rose.

The third period was all Bulldogs has Goettle, Mark Fratercangeli and Justin Polischuk all scored to put the game away for Adrian.

In addition to Goettle and Rose receiving assists on the Hosking goal, Adrian had a pair of assists credited to CJ Nicholson and single assists from Chris Derochie, Nik Sakellaropoulos, Marc Peters and goaltender Michael Barrett.

The Bulldogs will put their undefeated record on the line this Thursday night, October 13, when they begin a two-game series with the University of Michigan Dearborn at 7 p.m. at Arrington Ice Arena. Game 2 of that series is slated for Friday night at the UM-Dearborn Fieldhouse at 7:30 p.m.
