BURTON, Mich. - At Crystal Fieldhouse, the Adrian women's ACHA Division I hockey team scored each of its five goals in the third period en route a 5-0 victory over Indiana Tech, and the program's fourth consecutive Central Collegiate Women's Hockey Association Tournament title!
The victory wrapped up a spotless tournament run for the Bulldogs (25-9) after also shutting out Michigan State, 9-0 in the semifinals on Saturday afternoon.
"We faced Indiana Tech several times this year, and the battle is always tough," said head coach
Hannah Griffin postgame. "They are a great team and it's great to see a competitive rivalry start to form."
The 'Dogs and the Warriors, in fact, met four times during the regular-season, with the latter of the two winning three of those match-ups. Sunday, however, was all Adrian.
After back-to-back scoreless periods, the black and gold finally broke through on a goal by
Rhea Peterson six minutes into the third frame. Then, less than four minutes later, Allison Shaw tacked on a powerplay tally to improve the local's lead to 2-0.
Not long after, the Bulldogs all but iced the contest behind a Katrina Robinson goal, forcing the Warriors to pull their netminder in the closing stages. Robinson and
Gabby Jex went on to put home empty-net lamp-lighters with the goaltender out to round out Adrian's scoring.
"The first period was not our best," added Griffin. "But I thought we player very well in the next two, staying focused and executing our game plan. I am very proud of this group."
Leah Williams,
Bria Fewchuk and
Huntyr Bosher each added one assist for the Bulldogs, while
Jordan Hunt stopped all 29 shots faced in goal to keep some of the conference's best scorers off the board.
Adrian now awaits its positioning in the upcoming American Collegiate Hockey Association National Championships, which are scheduled for March 10-20 at the Centene Community Ice Arena in Marylan Heights, Missouri.
