Senior Day Sweep! Softball defeats Albion

ADRIAN, Mich. - At the Adrian College Softball Field, the Bulldogs opened conference-play against the Albion College Britons, snapping a three-game skid with a doubleheader sweep.

At the conclusion of Saturday's action, the Adrian softball program recognized the outstanding careers of its seven seniors, and they are Keira Stampfly, Katie Connolly, Natalie Mathers, Ally Harry, Bethany Perry, Lauren McCulligh and Katy McGarry.

Game 1: Adrian 4, Albion 1

In game one, Mathers fired a complete-game, one-run effort, and got a little help from her offense to help lead the 'Dogs to a series-opening, 4-1 victory.

Adrian's first at-bat of the afternoon was the difference-maker in this edition.

After a lead-off fly-out, Maggie Leveille got the Bulldogs on the base paths with a double to right field. Two batters later, McCulligh lined up a single to the left side, scoring Leveille for the game's first run.

Following the RBI, Connolly strolled up and connected on a multi-base hit to the grass, moving McCulligh up to the third base. The pair was then subsequently sent home off the bat of Brynn McKay, who singled to the right to extend Adrian's lead to 3-0.

The home side tacked onto their advantage two innings later, when Connolly delivered an RBI-single over the infield to plate Nevaeh Ginger.

From there, the Bulldog defense took over, and despite surrendering a run in the sixth inning, only allowed six total base runners for the Britons over the last four innings.

As mentioned previously, Mathers was solid in the circle for the black and gold, working through her first complete seven-inning game of the season to pick up her second win.

Offensively, Connolly paced the 'Dogs with two hits, while five other batters contributed one each.

Game 2: Adrian 5, Albion 2

In the second outing of the day, the Bulldogs worked some magic after falling behind early, ultimately prevailing 5-2 to complete the sweep.

The Brits got rolling in the bottom half of the second inning, as the designated home team, putting up both of their runs off of a bases-loaded situation.

From that point, however, the visitors were shut down by Adrian reliever Macee Schang, who proceeded to through 5.1 innings of hitless softball while retiring three on strikes.

That meant that it was up to the Bulldog offense to try and pull back in contention, and that they did.

In the top of the third frame, Genna Marasco started things off with a single right back to the pitcher. Then, two at-bats later, Leveille continued her day with a base-hit to left field, pushing the lead-off hitter to third base. Ava Ferrarelli stepped up next for Adrian, laying down a perfectly-executed bunt to score Marasco, and set up McCulligh with a pair of runners on base.

The senior came through, doubling home pinch-runner Ginger to tie the game at 2-2. Then, later in the inning with two outs on the board, McKay cleared the bags with two-run RBI-single single, swiftly giving Adrian a 4-2 advantage.

McKay would bring her day-RBI total to five in the fifth inning, when a single to left side plated Connolly to ice the game.

Schang, additionally, kept her composure in the circle, helping to stand six Briton base runners over the fifth, sixth and seventh innings.

For game two, Leveille, McCulligh and McKay each produced two hits to make up six of the Bulldogs' ten total.

With a perfect start to its conference schedule, Adrian moves on to play Hope College in Holland on April 7. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
